Use AI where you are stuck

You still decide what is true, which parts of your work matter, and how you want to represent yourself. If the task requires the tool to guess about your experience, narrow the task.

• Group a long work history into a few themes you can review.
• Compare a job post with your resume and point out missing information.
• Suggest simpler ways to describe something you actually did.
• Create interview questions from a real posting so you can practice.
• Turn your own research notes into a checklist.

Give it the job and the rules

Tell the tool what you want it to compare, which material it may use, and what it must not do. For example: “Compare this job post with these resume bullets. Show the matches and gaps. Do not add experience or rewrite anything yet.”

Instruct it to mark uncertainty. If your material does not show that you used a technology, managed a budget, or held a license, the answer should say that the information is missing.

Do not paste private information the task does not need

• Remove your home address, phone number, and unrelated contact details.
• Do not paste Social Security, banking, identity-document, health, or background-check information.
• Remove confidential information about an employer, customer, patient, student, or client.
• Read the provider's current privacy policy and data controls before uploading a full document.

Put your details back into the writing

AI drafts can flatten or leave out the details that make the story yours. Put back the customer, equipment, scale, constraint, decision, or result that mattered.

Read the draft aloud. If you would never say a sentence in a conversation, simplify it. If almost anyone could paste the same paragraph into an application, add real context or remove the paragraph.

Use it to practice before an interview

2. Answer it yourselfDo this before reading a sample answer so you can see where your story is thin.
3. Ask for focused feedbackHave the tool check whether the answer was specific and clear about your own actions.
4. Review every revisionRemove details you did not provide and keep wording you can explain naturally.

Know when the tool is not helping

Stop when the output keeps getting longer, more confident, and less connected to your actual work. Go back to the posting and your resume. Sometimes the right answer is to write the sentence yourself.
